Cathy MacDonald believes that the opportunity and ability to observe and appreciate beautiful hand-crafted and embroidered objects is something that should be available to all. The aesthetic experience provides an escape from everyday practical encounters. In the presence of pleasing things, we feel a range of emotions, such as attraction, surprise, awe, wonder, and admiration. As a hand embroidery practitioner, she wants to be able to bring those experiences to others through her work.
Showcasing surface stitches and using simple colour palettes is at the forefront of Cathy’s work, creating interest through innovative interpretation of techniques learnt whilst studying at the Royal School of Needlework.
Her experience in conservation, community and educational settings have influenced her ability to communicate with a broad audience. This communication is now happening through her hand embroidery work which she sees as sitting within the public and domestic art sector.
